The Holy Paper Grail

I've been QUESTING for paper. Paper that I could bind into journals and use for cartoons with my copic markers. Just last week, I decided I didn't like the pressure I was putting on myself to make a cartoon page every day. It was stressing me out. THEN I found the perfect paper. If I believed in signs, I'd take this as the universe telling me that quitting is a dumbass idea, but I don't. So there. It's called Rendr and I got mine at Blick's Art Supply. It came in pads and books, but the books didn't open wide enough for me. I'm a lefty, I ned that sucker to really lay flat. So I got a pad. And now I want to draw cartoons again.

Here's the pad:

I used a REALLY dark copic on it, RV69. Scribbled, let it dry. Again. A third time.

It's like MAGIC!

Rapidograph

Suzi bought me my first Rapidograph pen - it was $35!! It's a "technical" pen and it's steel tipped, which I find VERY appealing. Most of the time when I buy super fine point pens, they're felt tipped and the tip sticks out really far and bends over when I'm trying to use it. Ridiculous. I've been trying really hard to find good pens for my cartoon journals and this is going to be THEM. I'm going to learn how to use them and love them. I found them on eBay for $55 for the whole set, bought some ink and made all of them work except one.

June Cartoon Journal

I've been a slacker with my cartooning lately but I'm going to get back to it! Here's June's first page.

Cartoon: March 4

I'm so damn PROUD of this page! I think it came out super cute. I have to add some words and erase the pencil lines before color goes on, but it makes me happy!

Cartoon March: 3

I've still yet to be able to do this for an entire month. I REALLY need to just sit down every morning and do the previous day's cartoons. Maybe April 2012 will be the month?

Boring cartoon!!

Why would I put that as my title? Won't it keep people from coming to my blog? Don't know. Anyone out there? That's OK, I know who is and that you love me even when I'm boring!

First day of Rapid Riz cartoon

I know I already told you I was nervous about going to a drawing class - my teacher is ALL about getting up and showing things to the class, and I'm SUPER self-conscious so I don't usually like that.

Look at nervous me!! C'mon that's FUNNY!

I took this picture to try and help with the hand position and fingers and stuff.

Why do I always look so dang TIRED???

Cartoon 12/5

When I got a little behind in my cartooning I was going to skip some days - no one is perfect, right? And honestly, I don't DO all that much during the day. But then I was thinking I could just do ONE thing from some days, right? So here is my Parents' Day cartoon. I hate parents' days, by the way. I don't like people.

Cartoon Page for December 2...

I have to admit, I like the page from the 1st better. It's because there were no faces in that one. I'm not good at cartoon faces, and these ones I just sort of went at with the pen, no pencil first. Next time I'll make SURE to draw them in pencil first!!

Cartoon!

I'm hoping to cartoon yesterday, today. You know what I mean? So here's yesterday's page! I gotta ink it, color it, etc, but it's a good start and it makes me happy!!

Mini me :)

I'm kind of excited about making today's page because I got to hang out with Kelly! We tried on horrible dresses, got buzzed on margaritas at lunch, and laughed like idots - that's the best part!

Cartoons...

I've been slacking on my cartooning. Out of the habit, I guess. I've been trying to bring it back for October, but I'm about 15 days behind, so I'll try again to make it for November. I really want to make cartoon characters of the people in my life so I can draw them without too much effort, you know? These are last night's attempts.

I don't think they're cartoonish enough. I don't want them to look like Petit Dolls, I want them to LOOK like cartoons. Maybe I need to try Manga-style again? I think I might make this my November goal - instead of cartooning every day, developing characters for my peeps.

Bat/Demon wings

I've been slacking with my cartooning lately (for the past four months, actually), so I'm going to PRACTICE more. I just have to make myself, even when my arms feel too heavy to pick up the pencil. This is with Mark Crilley's latest tutorial, I LOVE his manga drawing vids.

Rough sketch:

Ink:

Mark's character:

It's the details I'm not good at - I can draw all the basic shapes, but the shading, the folds that make clothes look real - I suck at that stuff. Don't worry, I'll practice!!

Banana juice?

I still think that when you put a banana in a blender you get banana mush, not juice - even thought I've DRANK strawberry banana juice...

When I was at Kelly's, she gave me some paper I asked her to get for me WEEKS ago. It's for a new cartoon journal! Ajae thinks the word "cartooning" is kind of insulting, but I like it.

These are the covers, I took the picture for Kelly because I was super excited that night when I was making it.
Here it is all put together!
This is me, picturing myself trying to make banana juice. (This is what grocery shopping is like for me. I get all confused and wander around thinking about how to juice a banana and then forget what I was there for in the first place.)
I used the pieces for my journal cover! It's pretty damn cute if I do say so myself!! I always wonder about journal covers - is a piece of paper enough to cover it? Should I paint it? But this time I LOVE it!
The inside pages are 90 pound Fabriano Artistico drawing paper. It works so beautifully with my copics.
